IPC's 30kW bi-directional battery converter, IBC-30kW-480, is ideal for several emerging grid storage solutions including:
- Commercial Peak Demand Reduction
- Utility Load Shifting
- Buffering EV fast chargers
- Bi-directional EV DC chargers
The IBC-30kW-480 provides both charger and inverter functionality for stationary battery systems, eliminating separate charging and inverting systems. The system also provides battery system grounding without a transformer due to its patented indirect power transfer topology. This is built on the same Universal Power Converter Platform™ as the company's initial PV inverter improving product pricing, installation cost and performance.
 
IBC-30kW-480 operates at higher efficiency than conventional inverter/charger systems. Many grid storage converters run at relatively low power (10% average rated power), and efficiency of conventional battery converters are significantly lower than IPC' s solution at low power. At 10% rated load the IPC solution will operate at 95% efficiency compared to about 88% from conventional systems. This efficiency improvement can reduce battery (kWh) requirements by 7% and electrical energy input costs by 14% significantly improving the ROI.
 
 
The IBC-30kW-480 is ideally suited for use with two standard electric vehicle battery packs in series, but a variety of battery types can be utilized. The converter power and efficiency are optimized with the bipolar array configuration with +/-500Vdc to the converter. Highly sensitive and fast responding ground fault detect is provided by the bidirectional battery charger.
 
System control is provided by using an external Battery Management System, and an RS-485/MODBUS control interface. Used in a system with BMS and batteries, the IBC-30kW-480 bi-directional battery charger can provide surge capability, reduce peak demand charges, smooth intermittent renewable generation, or provide power for electric vehicle charging.
 
The lightweight compact system can be modularized for large-scale grid storage by placing multiple systems in a standard shipping container.
